Medium size “maggot ore” hemimorphite: Good example of so-called “maggot ore” from Sterling Hill. The brown fragmental matrix rock is cemented by hemimorphite and commonly contains insoluble minerals from the Franklin Marble, including diopside, phlogopite, graphite, micas, and in some specimens, grains of franklinite. A handsome, nicely preserved example. Should check all hemimorphite specimens under shortwave UV; some show a thin green-fluorescent growth layer. The fluorescence is due to uranyl-ion impurities.
