The Mineral and Gem Collection in the Department of Geosciences consists of approximately 6000 cataloged specimens, including samples from many classic European and American localities. The collection originated more than two hundred years ago and its evolution reflects the history of science at Princeton University. Many alumni and faculty have made generous donations that have enhanced the collection over the years. The collection also contains historic material and documents from early mineral dealers, recording the growth and development of mineral collecting and its interaction with the scientific community.
This database for the collection can be browsed by mineral class or search with advanced filtering. In addition, displays exhibiting selections from the Collection are available for viewing in the Alexander Phillips Mineral Gallery. The Gallery is located on the first floor of Guyot Hall and is accessible during normal business hours.
